You need to configure tty's into your kernel ;)  Take a look at your
.config file and make sure you've got the following:

#
# Character devices
#
CONFIG_VT=y
CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE=y


#
# Console display driver support
#
CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
