kernel panic with Debian sarge 2.4.18 SMP and xfs

The following message is a courtesy copy of an article
that has been posted to gmane.linux.debian.user.testing as well.

Happy New Year!

Using the Debian patch, compiled a monolithic, no-modules kernel
including xfs support. Have been able to successfully convert and use
all partitions to xfs except /. Can also mount and access the xfs
partitions including / from another Linux distib installed on another
HD.

Was able to format the / partition /dev/hda2 as xfs and successfully tar
back all of the files. That xfs / partition was mountable etc. as well
from the 2nd HD, /dev/sda2. Was able to configure and run lilo.
Tarring back all of the same files to the same partition formatted as
ext3 makes the system bootable again.

When booting into the xfs / partition /dev/hda2, the system successfully
begins and boot but ends in a kernel panic which kills init and freezes
the system.

On 30 September 2002 Mr. Federico Sevilla III posted a detailed
description of a very similar problem ¨Kernel panic killing interrupt
handler¨ with a similar system. However, cannot see that anyone posted
a solution.

Help greatly appreciated. :-)
