The 1.0.2 release (and RH 7.2 installer) has 2.4.9-13, not 2.4.9-31, so
I'm not sure which one you are actually looking at?

the 2.4.9-31 kernels do have CONFIG_SMP enabled, as do the 2.4.9-13
kernels.  If you're using XFS 1.0.2/2.4.9-13, I'd suggest upgrading to
the XFS 1.1/2.4.9-31 kernel anyway, and see how that goes.
