Millions of Files XFS RAID 5 (S/W)

Hello all,

Box is working better, for sure... quick review, onboard Adaptec
80 Mbps scsi... bootable.... RHL 7.2 with 2.4.18-XFS and Tronds Patches.
(asus P2B-DS with Dual 400's and 256 MB RAM)

Split channel bus with 2 (non bootable NCR53C875 Compaq branded
controllers).
Compaq Array (F2 perhaps?). anyhoo:

During deletes/ moves of say 2,000 files, in 200 directories ( maybe 3
levels deep max)
I can watch the lights on the drives go from Disk 1 to Disk 2 Disk 3
Disk 4,
and so on.. about 1/4 second per drive.. seems pokey... but it does
complete.

Was playing with SAR and seeing all sorts of things go by, there are
lots of
options.. the -d for tranactions per sec, the -q for run queue size...

Seems there are 255 transactions per second.. is this bottle neck? Or,
is Ypbind sucking
60 MB and Nautilus sucking 100 more of an issue? Its not swapping...
just slower
than expected for the task it would seem. Would comparison to O200 and
single disk
file system deletion be of interest?

Any idea what to watch in sar, or other system monitor tool? (or is it
just software
RAID5 that sucks the bus down?)

Thanks!

John Westerdale
