annoying slowdowns

Hi,

 I'm experiencing real slowdowns in my xfs partition on my laptop.

 I know there were issues of problems in some laptop harddisks with xfs but couldn't find any details about it, just some talk on mailing lists. My hard disk is a 6 gig ide ibm.

 The partition is not near full, actually 28% of it is unused.

 There are a lot of files on the disk, I'm using an e-mail client (Sylpheed) which stores each mail seperately as a file on the disk (mh) and have a not so small message base.

 Could it be that there are a lot of files and there is some tweaking I can do to increase performance? It's not a fast disk alright but wasn't this slow.

 I'm using Linux 2.4.17-xfs. Had the same problem with 2.4.14-xfs too.
