I think the only reason to have external log is performance. Having all
the logs external makes it complitated on servers with alot of
partitions. So until performance is mission critical or you use software
raid5 (only 5), you should be okay with internal log. I, for example, do
it only on software raid5 volumes because it makes a very big
performance difference there.
