problem compiling dmapi

When trying to build the dmapi stuff from CVS on 20010813 on my (mostly)
Debian 2.2 box, I get a whole pile of errors, starting with:

In file included from dm_attr.c:33:
../include/dmapi.h:308: parse error before `mode_t'
../include/dmapi.h:308: warning: no semicolon at end of struct or union
../include/dmapi.h:314: parse error before `}'
../include/dmapi.h:318: parse error before `mode_t'
../include/dmapi.h:318: warning: no semicolon at end of struct or union
../include/dmapi.h:324: parse error before `}'
../include/dmapi.h:344: parse error before `mode_t'
[several hundred more errors deleted......]

I know this is an easy one, and usually means include files not in the
right places or something, but I have the proper /usr/include/linux and
/usr/include/asm in place, kernel source in the "usual" place, etc.
Errors pop up if I'm trying to build a debian package (using
debian/rules) or by running the ./configure;make by hand. I can't for
the life of me figure out what I'm missing...
