unable to open initial console

Hi folks,

I'm having problems with systems upgraded from kernel-2.4.2-SGI_XFS_1.0
to kernel-2.4.3-SGI_XFS_1.0.1 that when I try to boot the new kernel,
boot fails with the message, "unable to open initial console."  I can
still boot into the 2.4.2 kernel with no problems.  I thought maybe the
problem was due to devfs, because I think the devfs kernel message does
not appear, but adding devfs=mount or devfs=nomount did not help.  I
have the same problem on a PIII and an SMP Pentium Pro system.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?  If so, did you find a
solution?
