Transformation matrices are one of the most important concepts you will
need in computer graphics. I don't personally know of any tutorials,
but I am sure there are some out there if you do an Internet search.
You will find a thorough explanation in Foley & Van Dam's "Computer
Graphics Principles and Practice" (Addison-Wesley), which is the Bible
of computer graphics. (Watch out, though, because the representation of
matrices in the second edition of Foley & Van Dam is transposed with
respect to the Performer documentation -- rows and columns are switched,
and the order of matrix multiplications is inverted.) Another useful
book is Mason Woo et al's "OpenGL Programming Guide" (Addison-Wesley
again), even if you do not plan to program directly with OpenGL -- it is
very clearly written, and an understanding of OpenGL is extremely
helpful for understanding Performer.
Have fun,
Geoff
