It is used internally for asynchronous paging operations. If you don't use ASD
or clipmapping, then you might be safe. :)

ASD stands for Active Surface Definition. ASD is primarily used for dynamic
terrain by Performer applications. For both ASD and clipmapping, you must
explicitly create the appropriate nodes to access the feature (i.e., if you
don't know about them you aren't using them).
