I have sent to you a utility that will convert SDTS to DEM in a separate
mail. Check out www.vis-sim.org for utilities to convert various national
formats to Performer friendly formats.

What resolution of DEM's are you looking for?
The USGS web site has 1:250,000 scale (90 meter, 1 degree) DEM's all in
the original .dem format for the entire US. This is the format that
the IRIS Performer loader understands.
SDTS is a newer format that the USGS is using for all the 1:24,000
scale (30 meter, 7.5 minute) DEM's. SGI doesn't provide an
IRIS Performer loader for this format, or any conversion software.
