One of our people tried installing it on a 5.2 system. He still had to
upgrade his glibc though.

I don't think it is a compulsion. It just makes sense for us. To
quote our product manager, "When you release a new version of software,
it's customary to release for the latest version of the OS". Also,
more technically speaking, the most recent version (6.0) has more recent
libraries/kernels/bug fixes/etc. Which is a desirable thing. For example,
if we run into problems with gcc/g++ (and we've run into a couple), we
know it's not because we running an ancient version of it and it's
something that has since been fixed. It also makes sense for us to use
one version of one distribution for this development so that when we
encounter problems, we know it's not because we're out of sync with each
other. It also makes sense to use Red Hat 6.0, not only because of more
recent libraries/kernels/bug fixes/etc., but that's also what we are
shipping on our servers. So to better coordinate with them and their
work, it makes sense to use the same distribution they are using. And
finally, just porting everything to Linux is the difficult part. Once
there, it's not nearly as difficult to support different
CPUs/distribution/revs of distributions. We truly want to bring Performer
to Linux in as timely a manner as possible. So it makes sense for us to
focus on the port to Linux. We do not intend on excluding Performer from
working on different distributions/revs of distributions. We are simply
trying to bring Performer to Linux with the greatest speed attainable.
So hopefully, one can understand that the use of Red Hat 6.0 isn't the
result of some compulsion, but rather, its use makes the most logical
sense for us.
