Sorry, just read this, or I would have responded earlier.

Angus describes quite well the reason why calculating an intersection
with a pfBillboard would be so difficult. And as it turns out, we
only test for intersections with the billboard's bounding volume, not
the individual geosets within the billboard node.

It seems to me that the pick should have been able to find the
bounding volume, check in the QueryHit for it, and you should also
verify that the volume is what you'd expect..
