The underlying geometry will I suspect still intersect just fine, but
the eye has to be in the right place for this to match the visible
representation. I can appreciate that in a picking operation you know
which channel is viewing the billboard but that is not accounted for in
the intersection routine it uses.
As an experiment try viewing the billboard along the z axis and see if
picking works. or try to pick near the middle of the billboard.
