Kent:
I think that you stated the situation very clearly. Hardware vendors
typically develop software for the benefit of their own products at the
expense of their competitors, and software companies usually support only
what is common among the various hardware vendors at the expense of
innovation. Technically however, the choice need not be only between the
closed and the common. We find that it is possible to build something that
is both widely portable and close to the metal -- benefiting both
application developers and hardware vendors. In fact, we at Intrinsic
Graphics have addressed this very problem as part of our larger mission to
enable efficient obsolescence-proof applications and content that are
portable with at most a recompile across a very broad range of hardware
from image generators and workstations down to game consoles and cable
set-top boxes. I'll be speaking on this topic at Wes Bethel's "Scene Graph
APIs: Wired or Tired?" SIGGRAPH panel (Thursday, August 12th from 10:30am
to 12:15pm) along with SGI's Sharon Clay and several others who have scene
graph development experience. Hope that you (and those on these mailing
lists) attend the panel and raise your questions. These are interesting
issues for the panel to address.
