Opening window over login screen

Using OpenGL, IRIS GL and GVS we bring up 2D & 3D graphics over the
login screens on many SGIs. A performer application I wrote freezes
when I try to do this. It works fine if someone logs in to the machine,
but we don't want to have to do this. Any hints on how to make this
work?
