Yeah! What a Performer fan! :)
The topic of FSG has been discussed on info-performer a few times.
Sharon Clay and Chris Insinger have posted on the topic last year,
and I have posted the same information too.
We presented this material in ITSEC, ITEC, and all the
SGI tech forums.
Fahrenheit Scene Graph (FSG) is the next generation scene graph API on
^
both NT and IRIX platforms. It will enable the next genration of SGI libraries,
Performer, Inventor, Optimizer, etc., to operate together.
FSG includes the scene graph capability of Performer and provides
very flexible extensibilities for people to optimize on different hardware.
Perform group is responsible for real-time vis sim extensions.
While FSG provides a solid, extensible scene graph architecture,
the extensions(VSE), version 1.0,
will handle multi-process synchronizations, pipes, channels,
and other basic real-time functions on top of FSG.
With these two libraries, you will be able to
have the core performer functionalities.
The next version of VSE will have support on
more advanced vis sim features, such as advanced lighting, fog, cliptexture,
terrain, high performance tuning.
This vis sim extension will be released shortly after the release of FSG1.0.
At the same time, Performer team is working hard on the next release of
Performer, Performer 2.3, to support SGI's next generation graphics hardware:
RE4 (I have no idea what the final name of the product is going to be).
We are also enhancing the current Performer. Once a quarter, we release
a binary compatible 2.2.x patch.
Performer is the highend graphics API for years to come. It is the core API
for our vis sim business. As long as there
are Performer customers, we will keep the Performer support active.
If you need the scalable high performance and advanced graphics features,
you need to stay with Performer. I hope you will feel comfortable knowing that
we are not forcing people off Performer at all. FSG1.0+VSE1.0 will let people
who care more about NT system to start the port.
Performer team will provide guidance on the porting process.

By the way, thanks for all the wonderful people who suggested names
for VSE. So far, we've got a few really interesting entries:
Fahrenheit Celcius
Fahrenheit FX
Fahrenheit FuSelaGe
FSG effigy
and my favorite
Fahrenheit 251 (like Bradburys book)
Unfortunately none of them is the chosen one because
Fahrenheit is most likely not going to be the final product name for this scene
graph API.
There is "Magician" still in the running.
Keep thinking... :)
