I have attended the 'Friends of Performer meeting' this morning at
the ITEC in The Hague.
Allan Schaffer started the talks and had to cope with a technical
problem that resulted in viewing the nicely color coded slides in
monochroom red.
Allan started by saying that SGI has changed name and logo.
starting today. I have tried to visit the web site http://www.sgi.com
but because I'm behind a firewall that strips javascript I can't see
a thing of the site. http://www.sgi.nl hasn't chaged yet.
The next thing was Performer.
o they will release a quarterly update of performer 2.2.x
mainly bugfixes, and small additions
they will be backwards AND forwards compatible
o they have just released 2.2.5
o they will release performer 2.3 around jan 2000
it will contain support for the new hardware that they are
developing now. No info about that.
Some things about Farenheit Scene Graph
o FSG 1.0 will be released around jan 2000
o SGI is making the VIS SIM Enhancements
soon after FSG 1.0 release they will release VSE 1.0
o capabilities of VSE 1.0 are those of Performer 1.0
o VSE 2.0 will be released around jan 2001
and will have about the same features as Performer 2.2
o Conclusion:
If you are in the High End Vis Sim
stick with Iris Performer if you run on SGI hardware.
After that Angus Dorbie gave a slightly more technical talk about
using projection systems and doing the mathematically correct
calculations
to use simple rectangular displays, of axis frustums, stereo displays,
HMD, sandtables, and non lineair distortion (domes etc). The all use the
same
principle of math.
They gave me the impression that I do things not quit right.
If I have made a few errors of leave some details out, they are all
mine.
