I have a couple of suggestions to extend the below solution. First,
keep a set number of polygons per trail and cycle them from the end of
the trail back to the beginning. This way you are continuously altering
DCS's, and not creating or destroying geosets while running the
application. If you want to be very efficient in the app, all missiles
could share the same goesets. I would also add texture to the
polygons. The texture should be a sequence of images. I would make 36
images from red fire to puffy smoke. Put them into one texture (6 x
6). This is important because you want to alter the texture coordinates
of the geoset, not change the texture for each polygon. If you have not
over loaded your draw yet, make all the polygons face the viewer
(billboard). If this is too much for the draw, remove the DCS's and
bill boarding, compute all vertex coordinates in the app. Add some
random-ness to almost every part of the code, and you should have great
looking trails.
