The main problem is the managed area. If it is ok for you to have 1280x1024
frame buffer size and 1024x768++at++96s then a
% chmod ugo+rwx /usr/gfx/ucode/KONA/dg4/cmb
as root should do the job. The a 'simple' user can switch the video format with
% ircombine -dest active -source file
/usr/gfx/ucode/KONA/dg4/cmb/1024x768_92s.cmb

If you want to change the managed area too, you have to reset gfx, which is
only possible as root. We added a 'special' user to our /etc/passwd, which has
root-privileges and as shell a script, which calls ircombine and then reset
gfx. Since the gfx is reseted, you can only use that login from a remote
terminal
