I guess you have to specify a vfo and not a cmb file with format=

you cannot change the managed area (global size) on the fly (destination
active). You first have to write the cmb in the eeprom (-dest eeprom) and then
reset the gfx.

Something like this should work (as root):

% /usr/gfx/ircombine -dest eeprom -source file
/usr/gfx/ucode/KONA/dg4/cmb/1024x768_96s.cmb

% (/usr/gfx/stopgfx;killall xdm;/usr/gfx/startgfx)&
