POSITION DESCRIPTION
Visualization and Animation Engineer for the CAVE
The Virginia Tech University Visualization and Animation Group and the
Nonlinear Dynamics Group at the Department of Engineering Science and
Mechanics invite applications for an appointment of a CAVE Applications
Engineer at the ACITC (Advanced Communication and Information Technology
Center) University Visualization and Animation Group
(UVAG) Laboratory. Duties of this position will include the following:
- Plan and design a state-of-the-art Ship and Crane Simulator at the
Computer Automated Virtual Environment (CAVE) at Virginia Tech that uses
state-of-the-art physical models. A motion platform will be used to
simulate the motion of ships in waves. The Simulator Operator will
function in a highly realistic virtual environment, complete with high-
fidelity, 270 degree scene visualization, ambient sound, base motion,
physical control console, bridge, chair, and cupola.
- Install the hardware and software that are needed to implement the
Simulator in the CAVE, including interfacing the Simulator with the
CAVE(tm) computer and peripheral equipment.
- Operate and maintain the software and hardware of the Simulator,
including the interface software and hardware.
- Provide support by training students and faculty and documenting the
operation of the Simulator, setting-up and maintaining various remote site
workstations as they relate to the CAVE(tm) development, and solving
CAVE(tm) programming problems at these remote sites.
Applicants should have demonstrated a working knowledge in software /
hardware immersive environments. They should also have working knowledge of
linking a variety of workstations across high-speed networks. Experience
in the administration of SGI systems, the use of immersive software, and
the interface design of Computer hardware is required.
Applicants should provide a resume that includes a statement of related
experience and the names and addresses of at least three references to
either Ali Nayfeh or Ronald D. Kriz, ESM (0219), Virginia Tech, Blacksburg,
VA 24061. Applications must be received by April 1, 1999, with appointment
to be made before the end of the Spring Semester 1999. The salary will be
commensurate with the candidate's qualifications. This research position is
renewable year-to-year for three years contingent on funding.
