For doing this kind of animations we have made an interface to
commercial animation tools like Wavefront Advanced Visualizer, TDI
Explore (and soon Maya) which provide much more control over making
pre-defined paths. Of course to do this you need access to such a
package. We read the object or camera motions and drive the relevant
pfDCS or pfChannel viewpoint. We can also record/playback live motion
but just as you say some motions are very difficult to do.
