It's just ridiculous to suggest that true real-time is possible in the
face of known facts about the NT OS, for example interrupt latency of up
to 2ms, as anyone will tell you this is hopeless. Vanilla NT is hugely
NON real time, if you get by with it (as you say) then I suggest that
your requirements don't merit a real-time OS. That's an engineering
fact.
This still doesn't address scheduling issues. Even simple stuff like
processor lockdown, runon, interrupt direction or high resolution
timers, NONE of this exists. None, zip, so you can't claim with any
credibility that it supports real-time.
To say NT is the future of real-time is surprising given it's current
deficient state in the most basic areas and the size of that market
compared to, say, SOHO use. Looking at the capabilities today, not some
pipe dream in the mind of an advocacy employee at Microsoft the opposite
is obviously the case.
Your statement is based on blind faith. Based on what's possible today
NT just doesn't meet real-time requirements, that may change, for the
better or the worse. Let's wait & see, it sure isn't an option today.
Cheers,Angus.
