How about decreasing light source intensity?? It's not that I have any
experience, but it seems to me that the higher you get, the less reflected
light gets to you due to light absorption and difraction , which is pretty much
like diming down the light, This would pose the problem of having any incoming
flying objet also look darker. Another way could be to apply a material to the
mountains (or whatever is down there) and change it's reflectance parameters,
or you could try to fake the effect with fog. Just ideas, never actually done
any of it.
