Reading absolute values from the depth buffer.

Hello,

Does anyone know how I can read absolute values from the
depth buffer ? I have tried using glReadPixels(), however it
seems that this function always normalize the output.
What I actually want to achieve, is to find out how far from
the eye point is the most distant feature (or just one of it's
rendered pixels) seen in a given frustum.
