First, thanks to all those who replied to my email I sent a week or so ago in
trying to set up our Onyx2 (IR Rack, 6.5.1m) as a dual keyboard system. It
works, kinda....
The situation I have now is that on the second pipe/keybaord pair I can not
change video modes at the user level. I have two problems.
1) setmon allows general users to change video modes. Unfortunately, setmon
doesn't work on the second pipe/keyboard pair (screen goes black, mouse is
still active - x server confused/dead???). This requires a stopgfx/startgfx to
fix (at least that is all I could find that fixed it...). Has anyone seen this
behaviour before? Should setmon work in dual keyboard mode?
2) ircombine requires root privielges to change the video mode (at least on
our system it does). It needs to write a scratch file in
/usr/gfx/ucode/KONA/dg4/cmb which is a root writable directory. We are
reluctant to change this as users could then delete or overwrite the video
combiantions. We need to have our users be able to change the video mode...
My understanding is that the correct way of changing video modes on IR
machines is with ircombine and that it is supposed to replace/subsume setmon's
functionality. Thus I am surprised that it requires root priveleges to work.
Is this consistent with how it should work??? ircombine seems to behave
strangely in another way as well. The man page seems to suggest that ircombine
should change video modes with:
/usr/gfx/ircombine -destination active -source file 1024x768_96s.cmb
This gives an error message saying file /home/bcorrie/1024x768_96s.cmb not
found (where /home/bcorrie is the working directory). It only works if I give
the full explicit path name:
/usr/gfx/ircombine -destination active -source file
/usr/gfx/ucode/KONA/dg4/cmb/1024x768_96s.cmb
Again, this is somewhat unexpected... I am indeed confused, so any thoughts or
comments would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Brian
p.s. For those interested, our Xservers file in /var/X11/xdm/Xservers says:
:0 secure /usr/bin/X11/X :0 -boards 0 -devdir /dev/input -bs -nobitscale -c
-pse
udomap 4sight -solidroot sgilightblue -cursorFG red -cursorBG white
:1 secure /usr/bin/X11/X :1 -boards 1 -devdir /dev/input1 -bs -nobitscale -c
-ps
eudomap 4sight -solidroot sgilightblue -cursorFG red -cursorBG white
