Comercialy, Polytrans is by far the most complete 3D file format I've seen,
check out http://www.okino.com/

        For the specific question of going from vrml1 to inventor the answer is
VRML1 IS inventor 2.1 in other words VRML1 == iv2.0, so if you have an inventor
2.0 file, it's first line should be something like:

#Inventor V2.0 ascii

just change it to read

#VRML V1.0 ascii

Of course you need the file to be in ascii format.

If you are running IRIX, cosmoplayer comes with a program called
