It sounds like you have an undefined specular component to your pfMaterial
(or perhaps an entirely undefined pfMaterial or something).
That's the kind of thing that can cause abrupt lighting changes.
If the specular component is somehow undefined then the problematic
objects may be picking up the undefined state from the last thing
that was drawn - which explains why it works differently depending
on whether terrain is present or not.
It could also be something like having texture enables - but no texture
coordinates being applied to the object - then you'd pick up the
texture coordinate of the last object to be drawn prior to the problem
object.
There are a LOT of possibilities.
