Underlays in Performer

I've used overlay planes extensively in Performer, but now I'm trying to
set up a window as an "underlay" to my normal double-buffered pfPipeWindow.
Are there any examples out there on how to do this? The Performer
documentation has a couple of vague references on setting up underlays, but
I haven't been able to get it to work. Any suggestions?
