triggering asynchronous events

I need to trigger user-timed events (particularly sound) for the port of
an inventor visualization program. My browsing of the man pages reveals
pfQueue as a way of storing events, but not generating asynchronously
timed events (e.g. at time=10.00, start sound "moo").

My interpretation of the documentation suggests that in my app process
I will have to check the current time against any sheduled events to
see if they need to be triggered (poll the scheduled events).

Is there a better way provided by performer?
