XtAddEventHandler

I have just started working with Performer 2.2. I am trying to add
spaceball (2003) support. I was wondering if someone could help me
understand why:

XtAddEventHandler(glwidget, (EventMask)NULL, True,
(XtEventHandler)GetInput, 0);

will accept no inputs from any device. The SpaceBall works if I handle
the X event dispatching myself, but doesn't if I use the
XtAddEventHandler in any form. Is there a way around this problem? I
have been fighting it for a month or so.
