calculating shadows

Hi to all,

I would like to know wich are the possible ways to compute and render
the shadows of the 3d scenes during a real time visual simulation.

Do Vega or Performer give functions to do it?

There is some sample code to understand wich function to use e the
problem complessity?

Any information about real-time shadows will be appreciated,
