Thanks to everyone who responded. For those who hit a similar problem, the
cause was that my /dev/ttyd? ports were write only for everyone except
root. Changing them to rw (+ "disconnecting" the GUI connection) got the
Polhemus working.

One more problem remains. The Polhemus works fine when the MR Toolkit is
compiled -o32, but doesn't work at all when I compile with -n32. I don't
know why and I'm hoping I wont have to delve too deep to find out why. I
wonder what has changed between those two compile options to break the
MRT?

If anyone has any suggestions then pls let me know. I was hoping I wasn;t
going to have to get my hands too dirty on this one.
