Ack - I hate these problems - but the no-nonsense
recipie that *almost* always works is:

Ignore the oh-so-cute pointy-clicky interface. It just
hides the real underlying problems from you. Instead look
at /etc/inttab - find the line corresponding to the
/dev/tty that you are using. It should say something like:

t8:23:off:/sbin/getty -N ttyd8 co_9600 # port 8

The important thing is that it says "off" in the third field,
that's the thing that stops UNIX from printing out 'login:'
and trying to read a username from your tracker.

Next surf over to /dev and check that the tty device you
are using isn't symbolically linked to anything else (like
/dev/dials or something) and that there are no other
devices with the same major/minor device numbers (you can
check that with "ls -l" and look at the two fields just before
the date - the device you are using should be unique).

Make sure the device is readable and writable by you (or
whatever user your application runs as).

If all those things are OK - and a power-down/reboot of both
the SGI box and the tracker didn't help - then it's probably
something to do with cabling - RS-232 is notorious for being
touchy when you switch from one machine's idea of what all the
RTS/DTS/DTR/DSR signals mean. Some of the most recent SGI
boxes changed the pinouts completely so that transmit and
receive 'ends' are swapped.

Good luck - you'll need it!
