Hi,

we also needed to add some sound to our performer applications and felt
that AudioWorks, although good, was overkill at present. My alternative
was to make my own 3D sound library based on the SGI Digital Media audio
development libraries. I have a seperate audio rendering process much
like the draw process. Sounds can be attached to pfNodes and I've added
some 3D affects like attentuation with distance and (2-channel stereo)
spatialization. Sounds can dynamically be started, stopped, change
pitch, change volume. I also made it work locally or over the network
(since our Onyx RE2 does not have a sound board). For us this is
sufficient at present and shows that you can "go it alone". Of course
this only works on the SGI.

I'm also curious if there are other solutions maybe using PC audio
hardware.

Regards, Simon
