This is perhaps too simple an answer, but be sure to check out the
pfuGridifyClipTexture routine in:

        /usr/share/Performers/lib/libpfutil/gridify.C

It is how clipfly (the cliptexture-enabled version of perfly, used by
the Yosemite demo & others) adds the colored hashmarks to the
cliptexture when you press the 'g' key.
