I was told there was some discussion on using VRML with performer on
this group (and I think some mention of OpenWorlds),
but I'm not sure of the history of the messages (the archive
wasn't working when I tried.)

Our OpenWorlds libraries and loaders support VRML geometry and
animation.
There is a demo version of our new 1.1 loader on our anonymous ftp site
(ftp.openworlds.com) in the merchant-SP directory. This demo version
has certain nodes disabled, such as Inline, Background, etc.,
but supports most, plus PROTOs, EXTERNPROTOs, etc.,
and gives you an idea of our commercial version of merchant.

An older 1.0 demo version is shipped with Performer, but doesn't support
as much as our 1.1 version.

Two commercial versions exist (one with web support, one without, at
$350 and $650
respectively). The 1.1 version will be priced at $500 and $750, but if
you order the
1.0 with the support contract, you get a free upgrade to 1.1.

The OpenWorlds libraries support VRML animation, scripting in Javascript
and Java,
as well as custom C++ nodes (i.e. we built a ReflectionMap node for
SGI).
This can fit into any performer application (or you can build a new one
with them), as well as support other rendering libraries. You can also
use non-VRML objects in a VRML animation through our Object node.

OpenWorlds 1.1 is currently in beta testing, and will be release
shortly.
Please see our website (www.openworlds.com) for more info, particularly
our
FAQ and other documentation pages.
