Depends on how much would you like to pay, or could afford. There are
commercially available packages to do interactive lights in the CAVE.
Personally, I saw one from Division. I remembered that Prosovia has one
too. Both work in the CAVE. Sense8's WorldToolKit should be fairly easy
adopted for this purpose.

If you want to do something by your own, Dave Pape's "Performer by
Example" will be a good start point. Just add an special Performer class
to handle your lighting operations, then add its instance to the suitable
place of your scene graph.

Dave, could you give us some of your insights on this topic? What is the
current status of the Performer/lighting problem? Is the earth-sky problem
in CAVE related? How about light source? What is the current status of the
CAVERN software related to lighting?

Also, could someone from VRCO give us your insights?
