dear group,

The complexity of the Performer 2.2 makefile arrangement and lack of
comments or documentation for the makefile structure and flow has really
been frustrating me. I want to integrate other software with my
Performer code, and the makefile is complicating what should be a
non-issue. My question is this:

Where can I find documentation on how pfmakerules, pfmakedefs, and
commondefs work, as well as the variables they provide to be used in
performer Makefiles. Additionally, what things do make/smake assume and
do automatically themselves.

(eg. Some variables get mysteriously defined, and some commands even get
automatically executed without ever being explicitly told to do so.
Where do these come from? How can I selectively disable or look at
variables or trace through a recursing makefile like you can do w/ C
code in a debugger? The make/smake man pages have not been as helpful as
I'd like.)

Any help is sincerely appreciated, thanks,
-Bill Feth
