Does anyone know how to get Maya format files
into Performer either (preferably) via a loader
or through a translator (e.g. into .iv).
Maya version 1.0 (i.e., the new Alias Wavefront)
   can only write maya format.

It's *very* easy to write a Maya plugin that exports Maya scenes into a .iv
or vrml -like representation. I wrote one yesterday. Admittedly it
doesn't handle animation or shaders yet, but given the dependency
graph structure that will follow quickly. There's always the issue
of what to do about constructs that don't translate well to a real
time system (e.g., funky shaders, IK, dynamics), but really part of
the overall scene design and requirements.

The ribExport.cc example in the devkit samples is good to look at for
ideas.
