If you have eoe.sw.imagetools installed then you can use oneband to break any
channel out of and image and cglue to stick any channels together to form an
image. For what you want to do perhaps you could make the greyscale image in
showcase or something ( the 'greyscale' imagetool will make a greyscale also )
in showcase you could make the greyscale go from one corner to another say
though. Once you have the alpha just use cglue with you existing rgb image.
