Rendering/shading seg faults

I have consistently had problems using graphics state commands, such
as pfEnable(PFEN_LIGHTING) and pfShadeModel(PFSM_GOURARD). In general,
I have programs which work without problems until I try to use such a
command - and when I simply add one such command I get a Segmentation fault.

I realize this is vague, and I could give the specifics of hardware and
performer versions, but it has happened on several different platforms,
and I believe several versions as well, so I am suspicious that there is
something which I am doing in my program which is a problem.

So I just want to ask if there is a caveat as to when such functions are known
to cause problems?
