In theory all that is needed to cycle the graphics pipe is just stop/startgfx
or use the 'Vulcan Death Grip' In practice however, especially on multipipe
systems, it's often worth taking a more 'belt'n'braces' approach such as the
one Allan suggests or even going as far as this:

(/usr/gfx/stopgfx;/etc/init.d/xdm stop;sleep 2;killall -9
xdm;/usr/gfx/startgfx) &

Don't forget the ( ) and the &
