The biggie is that state is encapsulated in the leaves.

If I build an inventor graph and apply state changes in the graph
the drawing traversal order guarantees that they happen incrementally
top down left to right. This constrains the optimization of the
rendering because generally you can't reorder the rendering.

Performer doesn't allow this so one part of the scene doesn't depend
on another for it's appearance.
