  I asked the question once, and as much as I remember, the LOD range you
specify is exactly the distance between eye and object center, in world
coordinates, IF :
FOV = 45°
resolution = 1 whole SGI screen = 1248x1024

concerning the function lodscale(fov, resolution), I dont know, but am very
interested
