Performer is 100% layered over OpenGL, there are no back doors of any kind.
Performer uses SGI OpenGL extensions and GLX functions that are all available.

Performer is still compatible with IrisGL (mainly for RE2), but there will be
  no new fonctionality for IrisGL.

There are no more IrisGL based hardware available from SGI. All IrisGL implementation
are now through the IGLOO library, that is not very usefull for Performer applications
as IGLOO is a layer on top of OpenGL.
