The Fraunhofer Projectgroup "Augmented Reality" at ZGDV seeks a talented
computer scientist to participate in a major European Commission-funded
research project, CICC (Collaborative Integrated Communications for
Construction). The position is available immediately and limited to
the duration of the project (Aug. 98). Yet, the successful candidate
will be strongly encouraged to continue research towards a Doctorate
degree on followup projects.
Job Description
---------------
The candidate will be a member of a multinational research group
developing augmented reality (AR) technology primarily for
pilot-applications in the construction industry. Job activites include
development, implementation, testing, and evaluation of novel AR
visualization techniques, working with other members of the group to
integrate computer-vision results into the AR visualization
environment, and developing test scenarios for the construction
industry. Some system support and administration within the group is
also necessary. The position stresses technical knowledge, creativity, and
self-sufficiency, as well as a desire to investigate new technologies and
problem solutions.
Education
---------
Masters degree or Diplom in Computer Science or a related field.
Experience
----------
A strong programming backround in C++/Unix is required, as well as
knowledge of high-end Silicon Graphics machines and programming
libraries. Experience in software engineering for real-time and
interactive systems is also desirable. In addition, a good candidate
should also have knowledge of some of the following:
+ Computer graphics, including
- OpenGL
- CAD systems and 3D file formats
+ X/Motif
+ Software engineering
+ Virtual Reality (VR), including
- input devices: magnetic trackers, etc
- head-mounted displays
+ Video
- video on Silicon Graphics
- video hardware
+ Multiprocessing and shared-memory
+ System administration and support
+ Silicon Graphics hardware
- Reality Engine or Infinite Reality graphics hardware
+ IRIX software libraries, such as
- ViewKit
- ImageVision

- Digial Media (Video Library)

The Fraunhofer Projectgroup Augmented Reality at ZGDV belongs to the House
of Computer Graphics in Darmstadt which consists of the Fraunhofer Institut
for Computer Graphics (FhG-IGD), the Computer Graphics Center e.V. (ZGDV),
and the Interactive Graphic Systems Group at the University of Darmstadt.
For operational reasons, the Projectgroup Augmented Reality is currently
located in Munich, Germany.
Munich and its surroundings is one of Europe's high-tech centers, with
numerous computer and manufacturing companies, and a major technical
university located in the area. Munich is also a great place to live.
It is home to the world famous Oktoberfest and other festivals, close
to the Alps and surrounded by numerous lakes. Culturally, Munich offers
a variety of museums, art galleries, and concert venues. Munich is also
centrally located for travel to other parts of Europe.
