One important point about the OpenGL-or-Performer question is that it
isn't an either-or kind of a decision. If you choose to write the
majority of your application using Performer, and later find something
that you can express better using the lower level interface of OpenGL,
then you can still do that.

Performer doesn't block access to the lower levels - you can still make
OpenGL calls in your Performer application. If you need to do image
processing (for example) then you will want to use OpenGL calls in the
Performer DRAW callback.

The only reason I can imagine for *not* using Performer is if you need
to be able to port onto a non-SGI platform.
