Hi Performer:

We got a visual simulation project and plan to buy the 4CPU
Onyx with IR. But we can't make a decision to buy R10000 or R4400.
The reason that we afraid to buy R10000 is that we heard some people
say that R10000 is unstable and not gain too much performance. Is
this True? (with IRIX6.2)(price is not a issue)

Is there anyone have R10000 Onyx with very good performance?
or Any suggestion? Thank a lot.

Well, our project at WSMR does have an R10000 Onyx Infinite Reality. Yes,
we have had a few problems, but SGI has been VERY good at handling them.
Off hand, I would say that the R10000 based SGIs have been more stable than
the Pentium chip from Intel when it was released and I'm sure you know how
well it is selling now. We had not had any problems with the CPUs that had
shut us down completely, we have a 16 processor Onyx and only 2 chips seemed
to be causing problems and we just didn't use them.... SGI replaced all 16
chips since they were all on the recall list, and as far as I know there
have been no further problems with the processors. I can't tell you
performance differences, we have some older systems, but I don't know the
processor numbers, plus the fact that our main system was upgraded from a 2
processor Onyx to a 16 processor Onyx and the performance, as expected, was
incredible by comparison.
If price is not an issue, do like any other system, and compare specs and
don't worry as much over the past, unless SGI is not providing you adequate
service (in which case talk to your local sales office -- because that isn't
normal from everything I have experienced).
